About the company
AkzoNobel is a leading global paints and coatings company and a major producer of specialty chemicals, with leading market positions and brands in countries around the world. We operate in a number of important market segments ranging from buildings and infrastructure to transport, industrial and consumer goods. We’re also the sector leader in sustainability and are number one in the renowned Dow Jones Sustainability Index. In practical terms, that means our sustainable solutions are in your lives, and those of your friends and family, every day. We’re the people that make it possible for you to do what you need to do.
Responsibility
Help us to achieve the highest standard of sustainability strategy and operation
AkzoNobel’s Industrial Chemicals (IC) business unit produces and markets high purity salt, chlorine, caustic lye, hydrochloric acid, chloromethanes and monochloroacetic acid (MCA). These products are essential to daily life and used in the manufacture of vehicles, glass, performance plastics, pharmaceuticals, feed and foodstuffs, textiles and disinfectants. IC has a global presence with plants and joint ventures in the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, the USA, China and Japan. IC is part of the business area Specialty Chemicals (SC).
Along with the rest of AkzoNobel, IC is committed to a determined sustainability agenda. Thus IC strives for fully autonomous plants based on new production processes with reduced asset intensity, increased resource efficiency, and a product portfolio that is based more and more on renewable resources. We also aim to increase sales from our current products by identifying new applications.
A significant reduction in our OEE and carbon footprint is central to the program, and this can only be achieved by applying new technologies in financially feasible projects. We have therefore focused on, and successfully delivered, process optimization initiatives in the past and will continue to do so.
Within this context, your mission in this role is to further define and drive the delivery of IC’s sustainability strategy in line with company ambitions. This includes responsibility for developing the sustainability agenda, managing all activities in the field of sustainability, and communicating and aligning with the business segments. You also collaborate and network with external and internal parties including Innovation Project Leaders, Marketing & Sales managers, ISC leaders and Competence Team Energy. On an ongoing basis you monitor progress and drive continuous improvements, and represent IC in external sustainability forums.
Is this a challenge that matches your profile as an inspiring and visionary project- and change manager who can steer, perform and interpret complex sustainability assessments and define a clear strategic direction and specific projects/actions? Do you have experience and affinity with the worldwide external scouting and screening of new technology and applications? Can you manage cross functional projects, involving external partners, with significant (future) business impacts? Above all, can you act as a senior specialist/expert on sustainability matters within our dynamic, multinational and multicultural business environment?
If you offer all this and more, we invite you to apply for the position of
BU Sustainability Manager
The role and its responsibilities
This role is based at the AkzoNobel Center in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, from where you monitor and guide all sustainability activities for all IC’s business lines as well as IC worldwide.
In particular you perform strategic assessments of the environmental impact of the BU IC business and its value chains now and in the future for all the business lines. You also ensure that IC meets agreed corporate target on reduction of CO2, Eco Premium Solutions (EPS) and OEE.
Further, you identify opportunities/priorities leading to the refinement of RD&I projects and continuous improvement projects. You also ensure that sustainability is fully embedded in business processes, and you support and coordinate an Operational Eco Efficiency (OEE) improvement program.
Another core task is to coordinate and set up all activities necessary to assess eco footprints (Cradle to Gate and Cradle to Grave). You also communicate sustainability information (e.g. footprints and OEE performance) towards and across the businesses and BU, and ensure best practices on OEE and cross-learning.
A sustainable Integrated Supply Chain (ISC) is a key AkzoNobel target and you put in place KPIs in order to measure sustainability performance of all our sites.
At all times you are the focal point for the BA Specialty Chemicals Sustainability Team and Corporate department, in regular contact with the Sustainability Council and the Sustainability Development Group.
